Isla Colón is composed primarily of limestone, and has a hilly topography supporting primary and secondary tropical rain forest. This island has a 5 km beach (Bluff Beach) on its east side, mangroves on its west side, and caves in the interior. Bluff Beach is one of the important sea turtle nesting grounds in the archipelago. Isla Colón has the highest human population in the archipelago, with most individuals living in the town of Bocas del Toro located on the far side of the island from our facility.
Isla Colón est composée principalement de calcaire et présente une topographie vallonnée abritant une forêt tropicale humide primaire et secondaire. Cette île possède une plage de 5 km (Bluff Beach) sur son côté est, des mangroves sur son côté ouest et des grottes à l’intérieur. Bluff Beach est l’une des principales zones de nidification des tortues marines de l’archipel. L’île Colón possède la population humaine la plus élevée de l’archipel, la plupart des individus vivant dans la ville de Bocas del Toro, située de l’autre côté de l’île par rapport à nos installations.
La culture est principalement afro-caribéenne, mais avec une contribution importante du peuple latino-américain, chinois et autochtone Ngöbe. L’espagnol est la langue « officielle », mais l’anglais est couramment parlé. De nombreux Ngöbe ne parlent que leur dialecte natal. Il n’y a que deux routes sur l’île, toutes deux partant de la ville de Bocas. Une route longe la marge est de l’île jusqu’à Bluff Beach et l’autre traverse l’intérieur de l’île jusqu’à Boca del Drago, où se trouve notre installation.

Bocas del Toro lies 9 degrees above the equator in the wet tropical zone (Holdridge Life Zone scheme). The average annual rainfall and temperature are 4000 mm and 30°C (86°F) respectively. In general, the wet season (invierno) extends from May to December and dry season (vierno) from January to April. However, rain occurs at all times of the year, only less in the dry season.
